The above noted problem when attempting to install modules, plugins, etc. in Joomla 1.5.5?

Try the following:

Login to the admin interface

Click on Help

Click on System Info

Click on Directory Permissions

You will see a list of Directories which are writable/unwritable

Can you check each one which is unwritable and set it’s permission to 777
